History of Ambedkar Jayanti

It is celebrated to mark the birthday of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, an Indian jurist, politician, philosopher, anthropologist, historian and economist who was the principal architect of the Constitution of India.

Dr. Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891. Born into a poverty, Ambedkar campaigned against the Indian caste system. He became a convert to Buddhism and is seen as a driving force in the surge of converts that saw many thousands of lower caste members become Buddhists.

Ambedkar was the first untouchable of India to pursue a college degree. He earned a law degree and doctorates for his studies in law, economics and political science, gaining a reputation as a scholar and campaigning for political rights and social freedom for the lowest in the caste system, untouchables.

In 1927, Dr. Ambedkar organised and led a march at Mahad, Maharashtra that eventually helped established equal rights for untouchable people who were not allowed to touch or our taste the water of Chawdar Lake.
In 2012, Ambedkar, was voted as the 'Greatest Indian' by a poll organised by History TV18 and CNN IBN. Nearly 20 million votes were cast, making him the most popular Indian figure since the launch of the initiative.
Dr. Ambedkar died on 6 December 1956 and was posthumously awarded the 'Bharat Ratna', India's highest civilian award, in 1990.

How is Ambedkar Jayanti Celebrated?

on Ambedkar Jayanti it is a custom that the President, Prime Minister and leaders of other parties pay homage to his statue at the Parliament, New Delhi.

Ambedkar jayanti will have parties showcase their love for Dalits

The battle for appropriating the legacy of Dalit icon and architect of the Constitution BR Ambedkar begins on his 125th birth anniversary on Thursday and will reach a crescendo as the key assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh in early-2017 draw closer.

Political parties, from those like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who swear by Ambedkar, and others struggling to appropriate his legacy, like Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress led by its Vice President Rahul Gandhi, will take part in several events to commemorate the Dalit icon.

The PM is slated to address a public rally at the birthplace of Ambedkar in Mhow in Ambedkar to launch his government's 10-day long 'Gram Uday se Bharat Uday Abhiyan' or village self-governance campaign. The campaign aims to foster farmers' welfare and social harmony in villages" and strengthen Panchayati Raj. Later in the day, the PM will inaugurate a platform for integrating wholesale markets in the country. BJP chief Amit Shah will address a rally on the occasion in Haridwar.

The BJP has asked its Lok Sabha members, including ministers, and particularly those from UP, to be in their constituencies on April 24, the last day of the 'village self-governance' campaign. Senior ministers Arun Jaitley, Smriti Irani, Suresh Prabhu and Manohar Parrikar - all Rajya Sabha MPs - will be all in UP when the PM addresses all the Gram Sabhas in the country on that day from Jamshedpur. The BJP chief will also be in UP on that day. The government has directed 350 of its officers to go to as many gram panchayats to spread the word about the Centre's pro-Dalit, pro-poor and pro-farmers policies.

For his part, Rahul Gandhi addressed a public rally in Nagpur on April 11. The rally marked the culmination of the party's year long events to mark 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar. Today, he was in Rajasthan to demand a CBI probe into the rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Barmer. He also attended a Dalit conference in Jaipur.

However, one of the more important political events on Thursday will be BSP chief Mayawati's public really in Lucknow. She is expected to launch her party's election campaign for the UP polls. Her speech will be keenly listened to for its nuances, particularly after reports that there might be a fresh CBI case against her in the disproportionate assets case.

Of late, Mayawati, always a shrewd strategist, has focused her criticism on the BJP instead of her main rival the Samajwadi Party (SP). The SP government might be fast losing credibility but Mayawati wants to dispel any accusations that she could align with the BJP. Poor law and order, increasing atrocities against Dalit and "anti-Dalit" policies of the SP government like allowing sale of land owned by Dalits - are all likely to consolidate support for the BSP chief.

The BSP chief has been criticizing both the Congress and BJP's outreach towards Dalits as attempts to mislead the community. There is speculation that BSP and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM might reach an understanding in UP polls. Senior BSP leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui recently met Shia religious leader Maulana Kalbe Jawad Siddiqui. Over the past one year, BSP cadres have been working in their areas with the objective of making Mayawati the chief minister of UP for a fifth time.
