India squad for Zimbabwe and West Indies tours to be picked on May 23

The Indian selectors will convene on Monday afternoon (May 23) to select the squads for India's forthcoming tours of Zimbabwe and West Indies. The national team is scheduled to play a series consisting of three One Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals against Zimbabwe, beginning on June 11th, before traveling to the Caribbean Islands for a four-Test series in July-August, the schedule of which is yet to be announced.

While the national selectors are expected to announce a full strength squad for the Tests in West Indies, changes are expected for the series against Zimbabwe, with several first-choice players set to be rested following a hectic workload which included a home series against South Africa, a series against Australia, a short T20I series against Sri Lanka, the Asia Cup, World Twenty20 and finally the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are more than likely to be rested while the status of ODI and T20I captain, MS Dhoni, remains unclear.

"Let's leave it to the selectors. Before any tour, if a player wants to take rest, they convey to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the selection committee takes a call. If the selectors want to experiment with some new players, they take the senior players into confidence. There's a set process in place," newly elected BCCI president, Anurag Thakur said, when asked about selections.

If the seniors are rested for the Zimbabwe series, Manish Pandey and Jasprit Bumrah, who made fleeting appearances during the Australian tour, are expected to be picked. KL Rahul, who impressed with his whirlwind knocks for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), is also expected to find a place in the touring party. Krunal Pandya, the find of this season's IPL has made a strong case for himself with his all-round show for Mumbai Indians (MI) and might, ironically, replace his younger brother, Hardik Pandya. Yusuf Pathan's strong showing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing IPL could just win him a berth in the middle-order, ahead of Suresh Raina.

The selectors have left it to MS Dhoni to take a call on his availability for the Zimbabwe series. If he decides to take a break, Wriddhiman Saha might find himself in the ODI squad as the wicket-keeper batsman. Mohit Sharma, whose death bowling has been impressive for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), should also be back in India colours. Ajinkya Rahane, who led India during their last ODI tour of the southern African nation, could then shoulder the responsibility of leading the young squad.

While the selectors have a lot to ponder about the squads for the shorter formats, it will be an easier task as they look to select the men for the Tests in the West Indies. With the openers looking solid, KL Rahul might find himself on the flight as the back-up option. Karnataka middle-order batsman, Karun Nair, was called up as an injury replacement during the tour of Sri Lanka and he could be added as a middle-order option for Virat Kohli.

Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are shoo-ins for the Tests in the Caribbean with Umesh Yadav, who grabbed five wickets in the last Test India played, against South Africa, expected to be the third seamer. Stuart Binny is also a strong chance to make it to the squad, as the pace bowling all-rounder. India's spin depth isn't a worry with Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra all but sure of making it to the squad.


The tour of West Indies will be India's first Test series since the 3-0 victory over South Africa, late last year. It will be followed by a run of 13 home Tests, with Bangladesh, New Zealand, England and Australia, all scheduled to visit India shores.

आईपीएल खत्म होने के तुरंत बाद 11 जून से शुरू हो रहे जिम्बाब्वे दौरे और उसके बाद होने वाले वेस्टइंडीज दौरे के लिए टीम इंडिया के चयन के लिए सेलेक्टर्स की मीटिंग शुरू हो चुकी है.

जिम्बाब्वे में होगी सीमित ओवरों की सीरीज

भारत को जिम्बाब्वे दौरे पर तीन वनडे और तीन टी20 मैच खेलने हैं जबकि वेस्टइंडीज दौरे पर टीम चार टेस्ट खेलेगी. टीम इंडिया के टॉप थ्री बल्लेबाजों, विराट कोहली, रोहित शर्मा और शिखर धवन को जिम्बाब्वे दौरे से बाहर रखा जा सकता है.

कई दिग्गजों को दिया जा सकता है रेस्ट

जबकि सीमित ओवरों में टीम के कप्तान, धोनी के बारे में अब तक कुछ साफ नहीं है. गौरतलब है कि कोहली पिछले साल साउथ अफ्रीका के खिलाफ अक्टूबर में घरेलू सीरीज के बाद से (श्रीलंका के खिलाफ हुई सीरीज को छोड़कर) हर मैच में खेले हैं. इस दौरान उन्होंने 4 टेस्ट, 10 वनडे और 15 टी20 इंटरनेशनल मैच खेले.

टेस्ट कैप्टन को आराम मिलना तय

तमाम इंटरनेशनल मैचों के अलावा वो आईपीएल में भी रॉयल चैलेंजर्स बैंगलोर की कप्तानी कर रहे हैं. आने वाले दिनों में भारत का टेस्ट कार्यक्रम काफी बिजी रहने वाला है. टीम के टेस्ट कैप्टन कोहली को विदेशों में 4 टेस्ट मैचों समेत कुल 17 मैचों में टीम की कमान संभालनी है. जिसे देखते हुए हालिया दौर में भारत के नंबर एक बैट्समैन को इसके लिए तैयार रहने के लिए समय चाहिए.

धोनी पर स्थिति साफ नहीं

यही बात रोहित शर्मा पर भी लागू होती है क्योंकि वो भी इस दौरान सिर्फ दो टेस्ट मैचों को छोड़कर लगातार खेल रहे हैं. हालांकि वनडे कप्तान धोनी जिम्बाब्वे में टीम की अगुवाई करेंगे या नहीं इसको लेकर अभी तस्वीर साफ नहीं हुई है. गौर करने वाली बात यह भी है कि अगर धोनी जिम्बाब्वे दौरे पर नहीं जाते हैं तो 2016 में टीम इंडिया के सीमित ओवरों के कम मैच होने के चलते उन्हें खेलने का बहुत कम मौका मिलेगा.
धोनी के इस दौरे पर ना जाने की स्थिति में अंजिक्य रहाणे को पिछले जिम्बाब्वे दौरे की तरह इस बार भी युवा टीम की अगुवाई करने का मौका मिल सकता है.

एक ओर टीम इंडिया के नये कोच को तलाशने के अपने प्रयासों को तेज करते हुए बीसीसीआई ने रविवार को इस पद के लिये विज्ञापन देने की घोषणा की। दूसरी ओर जिम्बाब्वे दौरे के लिए आज टीम इंडिया का ऐलान किया जाएगा। टीम इंडिया जिम्बाब्वे दौरे पर तीन वनडे और तीन टी-20 मैचों की सीरीज खेलेगी। 

टीम इंडिया का जिम्बाब्वे दौरा 11 जून से शुरू हो रहा है। वेस्टइंडीज दौरे के लिए भी टीम की घोषणा आज ही किया जाएगा। इस दौरे में चार टेस्ट मैच भी होंगे। लेकिन अब तक दौरे की तारीख फाइनल नहीं किया गया है। सूत्रों ने बताया कि विराट कोहली, रोहित शर्मा और शिखर धवन को जिम्बॉव्बे दौरे से बाहर रखा जा सकता है। धोनी के बारे में अब तक कुछ साफ नहीं है।

भारत का इस सत्र में काफी व्यस्त टेस्ट कार्यक्रम है और कोहली को विदेशों में 4 टेस्ट सहित कुल 17 मैचों में टीम की अगुवाई करनी पड़ सकती है और इसलिए भारत के नंबर एक बल्लेबाज को अगले सत्र के लिए तैयार रहने के लिए समय चाहिए। यही बात रोहित पर भी लागू होती है जो दो टेस्ट मैचों को छोड़कर लगातार खेल रहे हैं। हालांकि वनडे कप्तान धोनी जिम्बाब्वे में टीम की अगुवाई करेंगे या नहीं इसको लेकर अभी तस्वीर साफ नहीं हुई है क्योंकि वह भी पिछले कुछ समय से लगातार क्रिकेट खेल रहे हैं।

यदि धोनी जिम्बाब्वे दौरे पर नहीं जाते हैं और बीसीसीआई बीच में कोई सीमित ओवरों की सीरीज का आयोजन नहीं करता है तो फिर उन्हें 2016 में खेलने का बहुत कम मौका मिलेगा। यदि धोनी नहीं जाता है तो पिछले साल की तरह अंजिक्य रहाणे ही जिम्बाब्वे में युवा टीम की अगुवाई करेंगे। विकेटकीपिंग की जिम्मेदारी केएल राहुल को सौंपी जा सकती है जिनकी आईपीएल में अच्छी फार्म को नजरअंदाज नहीं किया जा सकता है। 

यह देखना भी दिलचस्प होगा कि क्या संदीप पाटिल की अगुवाई वाली चयनसमिति दिल्ली के प्रतिभाशाली विकेटकीपर बल्लेबाज ऋषभ पंत को शामिल करती है या नहीं क्योंकि चयनकर्ताओं के पास जूनियर को आजमाने का यह आखिरी होगा। भारत को इसके बाद इस साल टेस्ट मैच ही खेलने हैं। मोहम्मद शमी और मोहित शर्मा दोनों ने ही चोट से वापसी की है और उन्हें मुख्य गेंदबाज की भूमिका निभानी पड़ सकती है। 

रविंद्र जडेजा के साथ हरभजन सिंह और अमित मिश्रा मुख्य स्पिनर हो सकते हैं जबकि आईपीएल में प्रभावी प्रदर्शन करने वाले कृणाल पंड्या को भी टीम में जगह मिल सकती है। उनके भाई हार्दिक के लिये अपना स्थान बचाये रखना हालांकि आसान नहीं होगा। हार्दिक मुंबई इंडियन्स की अंतिम एकादश में भी जगह बनाने के लिये जूझ रहा है।
