Tennis: Adil, Mahak's loss ends India's campaign at Rendez-Vous
Adil Kalyanpur and Mahak Jain's loss ends India's campaign
India's campaign in the third edition of Rendez-Vous -- a Roland-Garros event -- ended on a sour note as both Adil Kalyanpur and Mahak Jain failed to make it to the finals of their respective categories.
While Adil finished second in his group following a loss against Minseom Lim of South Korea and a walk-over win over Lucas Koelle from Brazil on Friday, top seed Mahak lost both her matches against Himari Sato from Japan and Korea's Eunhye Lee to crash out of the tournament.
The tournament is a grass root level development initiative by the French Tennis Federation to promote young talents and introduce them to the clay court.
Adil and Mahak had won the India leg of the competition earlier this year at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) courts to earn themselves a place in the playoffs against players from Japan, China, Brazil and South Korea.
The eventual winner of the tournament will get a wild card entry into the Roland Garros (French Open) Junior.
Adil, Mahak bite the dust
The
real red clay proved slippery for the Indian youngsters, as Adil
Kalyanpur and Mahak Jain failed to make an impact, in the Rendezvous
Roland Garros French Open junior wild card tennis event in Paris on
Friday. Both the Indian players did not win a match and thus could not
progress beyond the league phase in the six-player competition. The
Koreans and Japanese proved strong in the competition which featured
players from China and Brazil as well.
Adil was
beaten by Lim Minseob of Korea 6-3, 7-6(4). With the Korean winning the
other match in the league as well and topping the group, the third
player in the field, from Brazil, did not want to play an
inconsequential match against the Indian and gave a walkover. “The
Korean boy played very well. Adil fought hard but made a few unforced
errors”, observed coach Vishaal Uppal.
In the girls section, Mahak Jain was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Lee Eunhye of Korea and 6-1, 6-2 by Himari Sato of Japan.
The
cold conditions and the lack of adequate training on clay proved the
key as Mahak could not eke out a set from players who were ranked 205
and 641. — Sports Bureau
