IPL 2016: Mumbai BJP secretary wants BCCI to move matches out of Maharashtra

The BJP leader feels that it is the duty of the state's citizens to support the initiative in order to combat the severe drought in rural Maharashtra.

Mumbai BJP secretary Vivekanand Gupta has made a fervent appeal to BCCI President Shashank Manohar to shift the IPL 2016 games in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, out of the state of Maharashtra.
In a Facebook post, Gupta appealed to Manohar to shift the Mumbai and Pune games outside Maharashtra because of the severe drought that has impacted the lives of farmers in Maharashtra. His rationale is that tens of thousands of litres of water are used to water the grass and the wickets at the stadiums. After some elementary calculations, Gupta says that "in the 19 Matches to be played in Maharashtra about around more than 70 lakh litres of water will be used to maintain the cricket grounds (sic)."

This is Gupta's second Facebook post on this issue. Earlier on Friday, he had tagged the Facebook pages of several BJP wards in Mumbai, seeking support. Comparing the success of the 'water-less' Holi campaign to IPL, Gupta called for similar support from the citizens of Mumbai.

IPL 9 is set to begin with a match between Mumbai Indians and new team Rising Pune Super Giants at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on April 9.
