5 promises NOT to make to your partner this year

Those who believe in a diligent celebration of every day that makes up the Valentine's Week, already know that February 11 marks Promise Day. Those of you who don't, you probably don't care enough to read any further.

So, as the name suggests, Promise Day involves two partners making promises to each other and trying their best to live up to them--but is the effort to keep the promise sincere enough? Or does the promise almost always end up being broken--because you know, promises are meant to be broken after all, right?

Wrong. This Valentine's Day promise to NOT make a promise that you know will ultimately end up being broken.

Here are some common promises that are the usual suspects when it comes to failure.

To quit smoking, drinking: You're not going to do it anyway--not tomorrow, not a few weeks later. People who promise their respective partners that they're going to give up on something that they are addicted to, almost always end up not keeping their promise. Don't get us wrong, we're not trying to generalise--but we know you'd understand even if we were.

Why go through the trouble of making a promise, not keeping it, getting caught, and then giving explanations?

To give up on your sleep for your partner: For most of us, sleeping is an escape from the world. And for those of you who promise to sleep less, and spend the night talking to your partner, are well, just being dishonest. Because, sooner or later, you're going to be so tired, that nothing will come in the way of you and your sleep, the ringing phone be damned.

To share your food: Let's face it. Every time your offer for food gets accepted there's a certain sense of agony in your heart. And even though we're not doubting the love you have for your partner, the love you have for that last slice of pizza, that cheese burger or that blueberry cheesecake is something you wouldn't want to share.

To give up on your friends because your partner doesn't like them: This is just unfair. Do not promise your partner that you're going to give up on your friends because of your partner's dislike for them. People are innately different. Instead, you can choose to spend time with them in without your partner. It doesn't mean you like them any less, it just means that you're not ready to give up on a certain part of your life.

To not look at any one else but your partner: Come on, admit it, looking at an attractive stranger is a reflex action for most of us. So, to promise your partner that you will have eyes just for them and nobody else is as impossible as it is dishonest.

So in case you are planning to make any of the above mentioned promises, make them in your head and try to live up to them--that way you will be disappointing only one person.
