Mahindra KUV100 vs Hyundai Grand i10 vs Maruti Suzuki Swift: Specs Comparison
Mahindra and Mahindra is betting big on the KUV100 after launching the compact SUV in India at a starting price of 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the petrol version. The KUV100 has also been launched in a diesel engine version starting at 5.2 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The highly-anticipated SUV will be the carmaker's third sub-4 metre vehicle for India and the first one to launch in 2016. Mahindra will offered the KUV100 in 7 variants - K2, K2+, K4, K4+, K6, K6+, and the top-of-the-line K8.
What makes the Mahindra KUV100 stand out is the fact that it is a mini SUV and there is no other car quite like it in India yet. However, that will change when the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Datsun Redi GO are eventually launched in the country.
For now though, the Renault Kwid comes slightly close mainly due to its 'hatchback with high ground clearance' looks. However, the Kwid is smaller than the KUV100, not in the same price bracket, and not equipped with as many features.
In terms of price and size, the closest competitors in India are the Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Swift. So, here's a look at how the Mahindra KUV100 stacks up against its potential competitors - at least on paper.
Styling, Dimensions & Features
The Mahindra KUV100's design is inspired by its elder sibling, the XUV500, with both cars built on a monocoque chassis. The front fascia is beefy and aggressive, and its SUV stance is obviously emphasised more due to its high ground clearance of 170mm and overall height of 1,655mm.
In comparison, the Grand i10 and Swift are regular hatchbacks, with
ground clearances of 165mm and 170mm, respectively. The KUV100 is taller
than its competitors with the Grand i10 coming in at 1520mm and the
Swift at 1530mm.
Length-wise, the Mahindra KUV100 is shorter at 3,675mm, while the Grand i10 is 3,765mm long and the Swift measures 3850mm. However, Mahindra's latest offering is wider at 1,715mm, when compared to the Grand i10's 1,660mm and Swift's 1695mm.
Moving on to the features, the higher variants of KUV100 will get head-lamps with DRLs and LED fog-lamps, which are missing in its competitors. Mahindra's compact SUV also gets black plastic under-body cladding, a large silver skid plate, a rear spoiler, and roof rails to enhance the car's looks.
The mini SUV is offered with two seating configurations - a standard
5-seater and a 6-seater with bench seats in the front and rear. Both the
Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Swift have a 5-seater arrangement.
The Mahindra KUV100 comes with quite a few features like an infotainment system with a 3.5-inch display screen, in-built driver information system, Bluetooth audio and hands-free call, USB, AUX, steering-mounted controls, tilt-adjustable 3-spoke steering wheel, and height-adjustable driver's seat (depending on the variant). Similar features exist in the Grand i10 and Swift as well. However, it outscores its rivals on storage space with handy cubby holes all over the interiors.
One area where the KUV100 misses out is the availability of push-button start and smart key, which are provided in the top versions of its competitors.
In terms of safety, the KUV100 gets ABS and EBD as standard across all models along with optional dual airbags. The Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks only offer ABS in their higher variants.
Engines & Performance
Under the hood, the KUV100 is powered by an all-new range of petrol and diesel engines from Mahindra, the mFalcon series. The petrol engine, mFalcon G80, is a 1.2-litre unit that churns out 82bhp and develops 114Nm of torque. In comparison, Grand i10's 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine has a similar output of 82bhp and 114Nm of torque. The Swift's 1.2-litre K-Series engine also has similar output figures, producing 84bhp of power and 115Nm of torque.
The new 1.2-litre diesel unit on the KUV100, mFalcon D75, is a turbocharged common-rail diesel engine that puts out 77bhp along with 190Nm of torque and outpowers both its rivals. The 1.1-litre U2 diesel motor on the Grand i10 has an output of 70bhp and 160Nm of torque, while the Swift's 1.3-litre DDis engine produces 75bhp of power and 190Nm of torque.
Both engines on the SUV are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, which is also the case with the Grand i10 and Swift. However, the Grand i10 scores on this front with the petrol version of the hatchback offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission option as well.
The Mahindra KUV100 also has a unique feature which is not available in its rivals - it comes equipped with the company's Micro-Hybrid technology with engine start/stop feature and two driving modes - Power and Eco.
As far as fuel efficiency figures are concerned, KUV100 tops its competitors. For the petrol version, Mahindra claims that its mileage is rated at 18.15Km/l, which is more than the Swift's 17.37Km/l and Grand i10's 16.54Km/l (15.31Km/l for the petrol automatic transmission version). The KUV100 diesel variant returns figures of 25.32Km/l, in comparison to 23.19Km/l for the Swift and 22.64Km/l for the Grand i10.
Mahindra has priced its latest offering in the 4.5 - 6.8 lakh range, while the Grand i10 comes in the 4.7 - 6.7 lakh price bracket and Swift in the 4.6 - 7.3 lakh range (all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). At that price, the Mahindra KUV100 offers an attractive brand new alternative - and that too, not a hatchback, but still a small car, with the butch looks of an SUV.
