Filmfare Awards 2016: 'Bajirao Mastani' sweeps away

bajirao-collage-380The filmfare awards are probably the most fair and reasonable awards of this season.

Filmfare Awards 2016: Ranveer Singh

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani walked away with 9 Filmfare awards on Friday night, including in major categories such as Best Film, Best Picture, Best Actor (Ranveer Singh), Best Actress In A Supporting Role (Priyanka Chopra), Best Singer Female (Shreya Ghosal), Best Choreography (Birju Maharaj) and Best Action (Sham Kaushal).

Filmfare Awards 2016: Deepika

Bajirao’s Mastani, Deepika Padukone won the Best Actress award, but for her performance in Shoojit Sircar’s Piku which also fetched Amitabh Bachchan the critics’ award for best actor.

It is puzzling how two principal performances from the same film were eligible for awards in the popular and critic’s categories .

Filmfare Awards 2016: Best Director

Bajirao Mastani is Sanjay Bhansali’s most Filmfare-awarded film after Black, which won 11 awards and Devdas which won 10 awards. With these 9 awards for his latest work Sanjay Bhansali’s collected works have received the maximum number of popular awards.

Interestingly, this is the only year in living memory when none of the three Khan superstars has won the best actor award. Salman Khan, nonetheless, performed live on stage.

Bajirao Mastani beat the other favourite Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan in almost all the categories. Bajrangi Bhaijaan won only a Best Story award for K Vijayendra Prasad.

Moushumi Chatterjee won a richly-deserved lifetime-achievement award and would be recalled by posterity for giving the shortest ever thank you speech which went something like ‘Khush raho, vyast raho mast raho’.

Sadly, Masaan actor Vicky Kaushal lost the Best Debutant’s award to Sooraj Pancholi for Hero. But Vicky’s father, the stunt co-ordinator Sham Kaushal, won a Filmfare award for his spectacular war sequences in Bajirao Mastani.

The Filmfare awards turn out to be an epic evening indeed, with Bajirao Mastani walking away with the lion’s share. Here are a list of all the winners:
