Moto G4 to debut on June 22 in India

Motorola had launched the Moto G4 Plus in India on May 17. At that time the company had also announced the Moto G4 but its availability was supposed to be in June. Well, the phone is arriving in markets now. Motorola has said on Twitter that the Moto G4 will be available in India from June 22.

The Moto G4, just like the G4 Plus, is likely to be an Amazon India exclusive, at least initially. The phone is fairly similar to the Moto G4 Plus in terms of looks and functionality but there are some key features. It has a camera that is not going to be as good as the one in the G4 Plus as well as has lower-speced hardware in some areas. However, it is also likely to be a cheaper phone compared to the G4 Plus.

The G4 Plus costs Rs 13,499 for the 16GB version. The Moto G4, which only comes in the 16GB/2GB RAM version, is likely to have a price closer to Rs 11,000, or in words similar to the price of the Moto G Turbo right now.

For most consumers, who are looking to get the Moto G4 Plus, but at a price closer to Rs 10,000, the Moto G4 could be a viable phone. It has the same design and the same 5.5-inch screen with FullHD resolution. It also has the same Snapdragon 617 processor that powers the Moto G4 Plus and the same 3000mAh battery with turbo-charging support. This means you will get the similar performance, similar software and similar Android in both the phones. 

Although, the Moto G4 lacks the fingerprint scanner the Plus model has on the front. But that is something most consumers won't miss. What they will definitely miss however, is the camera performance. The 13MP rear camera in the Moto G4 is a more regular camera with F2.2 lens compared the Moto G4 Plus camera that has a 16MP rear camera with a faster F2.0 lens.


When we reviewed the Moto G4 Plus we found the camera inside the phone to be one of the best ever put in a sub-Rs 20,000 phone. It fact, it has a fantastic camera that can match the performance of what you get in many high-end phones. The similar kind of camera performance is unlikely in the Moto G4, although for its price and compared to its competitors it is also likely to offer good imaging performance.

Moto G4 To Go On Sale In India On June 22

Motorola has confirmed the Moto G4 will launch in India on June 22. The company’s Moto G4 Plus has already gone on sale in India.

Moto G4 Plus starts at Rs 13,499 for 2GB RAM+16GB storage, going up to Rs 14,999 for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage option. Motorola has not confirmed the pricing for the Moto G4 in India.

Moto G4 will also be Amazon exclusive in India. Moto G series has become Amazon exclusive from this year on, while earlier the phones were sold only on Flipkart.

Moto G4 features a 5.5-inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It is 7.9 mm thick with rounded edges, and has a more squared look. It has a 5MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus. On the other hand, Moto G4 Plus has a better 16 mp rear camera with improved low-light performance.

Moto G4 is powered by Snapdragon 617 1.5 GHz octa-core processor, coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB (expandable up to 128GB via microSD card). It comes with Turbo charging and a 3,000 mAh battery and runs the latest Android 6 OS. Moto is promising six hours of battery life with just 15 minutes of charging.

Moto G4 Plus also has the same battery and processor, but it also comes with a fingerprint scanner, which is not there in the Moto G4.

In our review of the Moto G4 Plus, what stood out was the camera, especially the low-light performance given the pricing. Where overall performance goes, the Moto G4 Plus offers the same consistency and experience as the earlier Moto G3 series, thanks to the pure Android OS.

In the case of the Moto G4, we’ll have to see how Moto prices the smartphone, given this is not a drastic overhaul of the Moto G3 series.  If Moto G4 is priced under Rs 11,000, then it could pose a serious challenge to other players in the market like Redmi Note 3, Le 2, Yu Yunicorn, etc.
