The Karnataka Examination Authority's Common Entrance Test (CET) will not be considered while allotting seats for undergraduate medical and dental courses from this academic year.

On Monday, the Supreme Court scrapped the entrance exams conducted by state governments for medical and dental undergraduate seats, making the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) the only gateway for admission to MBBS and BDS in the country from this academic year.

The SC also said it would be open to CBSE to reschedule the date of holding NEET-2, if necessary.

The apex court order, though, has left students confused on another count. According to the SC, a student who has appeared for NEET 1, as the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) is now known, will be allowed to appear for NEET 2, but in such cases, NEET 1 scores will not be considered. If students don't appear for NEET 2 , their NEET 1 marks will be considered.

Madhukesh H, a software engineer, said his son had appeared for both CET and NEET 1, and done well in both the exams. "If my son doesn't appear for NEET 2 and the paper is easy, it will be a loss for him. If he appears for NEET 2 and gets lower marks than NEET 1, it is again a loss for him. I and 10 other parents will file a PIL as it's creating too much stress for students," he added. Like Madhukesh, other parents and students are under tremendous pressure.

Niranjan M, a II PU student from Mysuru, said he has appeared only for CET but is not prepared for NEET 2 which would be difficult as it's a national-level entrance test. "It's sad, I may not get a medical seat. I am disappointed."

Natesh Kumar and a group of parents wanted to know who would ensure that the fee paid for CET and other entrance exams would be refunded, now that the exams will not be considered for medical and dental seats. Around 1.78 lakh students wrote the CET after paying a fee of Rs 650 each.

Sunil K, a Class 12 student and his friends, though, are happy. "This is an opportunity to prepare well for NEET 2. Now we have more time and the option of selecting seats in other states also," they said.

DS Ramesh, executive director of KEA, said: "We will wait for the government's order. A decision will be taken whether to refund the students' fees or not, based on the government's decision." CET was held on May 4 and 5, while NEET 1 was conducted on May 1.
