JEE Main 2016
JEE 2016: The verdict is ‘moderate’, higher cut-offs predicted
A higher number of “wrong” questions, leading to a possibility of more bonus marks, safe “formula-based” questions in theoritical subjects and an easy math section, marked the JEE Main 2016 examination which took place Sunday, seeing participation from over 12 lakh students from across India including 20,000 students from Pune. Students and tutorials gave mixed reviews for the papers, the difficulty of which was termed “moderate”, with most predicting a higher cut-off for the common merit list as compared to the previous year’s 105.
“I think the cut off will be at least 120, the reasons being that this year, there were five questions that were either wrong or had multiple answers. The students who attemped it will get bonus marks, which means at least 20 marks. The standard of math questions has come down with at least 50 per cent questions being easy while 12 questions from the physics paper (at least 45 per cent of questions) came from formula-based topics. This gives an advantage to fresher students who had recently prepared for the board and appeared for practical exams. The number of tricky problems has reduced drastically. All these factors will lead to the increment in selection percentage from rural areas compared to earlier years,” said Lalit Kumar, CMD, Prime Tutorials.
Anirudh Singhal, one of the aspirants who appeared for the exam, rued about a length math paper. “A lot of questions in physics were theoritical and didn’t require much analysis. I think chemistry was the toughest as it had some trick questions,” he said.
RL Trikha, director, FIITJEE, who analysed the paper also predicted higher cut-offs than last year. “Of all the questions, 27 were easy, 48 questions were moderately difficult and 15 were of relatively higher difficulty. Few questions in physics were tricky the paper was tougher than last year. Besides, one questions in physics appears to have had two answers, one question in chemistry had no matching answer in the given choices. But a student who has been focused in improving speed and accuracy by taking regular quizzes and mock tests on JEEM pattern must have done reasonably well.” Vaibhav Bakliwal from Bakliwal Tutorials however, predicted that with a tougher paper and the top two lakh candidates of JEE Main eligible to appear for JEE Advanced instead of 1.5 lakh, the cut-offs would fall.
JEE Main 2016: Check paper analysis
JEE Main 2016 examination has been conducted today at over 2000
centres across India and abroad. About 12 lakh students have appeared
for Paper – 1 and Paper – 2 off-line mode. Aspirants had the choice to
appear in any one of the two types of papers or both.
The Question Paper – I for B.E. / B.Tech courses in 2016 is similar to pattern of 2011 to 2015. Paper has objective type questions multiple choice with one out of four correct with equal weightage to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
There are 30 questions each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with four marks for right answer and for each in-correct response, one-fourth of the total marks allotted to the question would be deducted from the total score.
Paper is balanced and is set from CBSE syllabus of Class XI and XII, however as expected many of the questions is conceptual with some needing analytical skills. About 27 questions are easy, 48 questions are of moderate difficulty and 15 questions are of relatively higher difficulty.
According to the FIITJEE, Director, RL Trikha, the paper was moderate with some sections easy and some tricky. “As in 2015, few questions in Physics are tricky and challenging but compared to last year this section is shade tough. Further Q. 84 (Set F) has two answers. One or two questions in Chemistry are tricky prima-facie. Compared to last year it is difficult. Q 17 (Ser F) appears to have no matching answer in choices given. Mathematics compared to last year is shade tough with few questions lengthy.”
Aakash Educational Services, Aakash Chaudhry, said, “In all the three subjects, five to six questions were framed quite differently. Few of them were also ambiguous. In Physics, there were two questions which had more than one correct answer, leaving students in a dilemma whether to leave it or attempt it. In addition, two questions were confusing and anyone who tried attempting them might have wasted fair amount of time.”
Mohit Sharma, a student found Mathematics paper lengthy. “Mathematics paper was good but lengthy. Chemistry paper was pretty memory-based. I found only one question a little difficult,” he said.
Admission in NIT’s / IIIT’s / DTU / CFTI’s and other allied institutes will be based on overall merit list comprising of 60% of JEE Main marks and 40 per cent of normalised Board marks.
Top 2 lakh candidates of JEE Main will be eligible to appear in JEE Advanced on May 23 to fight for one of 10,000 seats in the prestigious IIT’s / ISM Dhanbad.
