Barca are 'lost' at sea while Atletico Madrid had the 'perfect game'

Atletico Madrid's Champions League win over Barcelona dominates the headlines in Spain, with one newspaper suggesting the Catalan giants are 'lost'.

Reigning European champions Barcelona crashed out of Europe's prestigious competition following a 2-0 defeat by Spanish rivals Atletico.

Barcelona-based publication Sport have an image of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and their team-mates looking dejected pictured on the familiar backdrop of American TV series Lost.

Atletico Madrid were better than Barcelona

Sport say Luis Enrique's side must now 'rise to the double' as they bid to win the Spanish title and the Copa del Rey.

Mundo Deportivo highlight the fact Barcelona should have been handed a penalty in the closing stages of the Champions League quarter-final tie.

However they also questioned their desire to win the treble.

'They did nothing in those final minutes to show they were aspiring to win another treble.

'Not a good night for Barca fans' hearts, as their team were on the brink and fighting an uphill battle for most of the game.'

Gabi handled the ball in the area however Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli deemed the offence to have taken place on the edge of the box.

Madrid-based newspapers Marca and AS focus on Diego Simeone's side rather than Barcelona's apparent downfall.

Marca describe Atletico's performance as the 'perfect game in a boiling Vicente Calderon', while Sport have an image of Antoine Griezmann celebrating on the front cover of their paper.

Atletico's 3-2 aggregate win over Barcelona means Simeone's side will meet neighbours Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Manchester City in the next round.

All four sides will find out their Champions League opponents on Friday morning.

Barcelona: Luis Enrique takes blame for Champions League exit

Barcelona are "in a hole" and "finding it difficult to score goals" admitted boss Luis Enrique following their shock Champions League quarter-final defeat.

The holders were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid, who won the second leg 2-0.

"The team are sad. We aren't at our best at the moment, nor our most effective," he said.

"I'm 99.9% to blame, no 100. That's why I am the coach, the most responsible. We all have to improve."

Antoine Griezmann scored both goals for Atletico at the Vicente Calderon, while Lionel Messi failed to net for the fifth club game in a row.

"It is clear that we are not in our best form, especially if you consider how we were playing before, but we need to lift ourselves," added Enrique.

It is only the third time in 11 years that Barcelona have not reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

They are three points clear of Atletico at the top of La Liga, but have lost three of their past four games in all competitions.

"It was the game we predicted, although perhaps I didn't expect Atletico to play so deep. It wasn't our best day," added Enrique, who won the treble in his first year in charge at Barca.

"We have to stay calm and think that we still have two competitions where we are in the running.
"Everyone can choose the explanation. To give mine I have to analyse the performance. It is not our best time, but it is not the time to be nervous."
