Ireland are one of the strong favourites to make the final draw of the ICC World T20 that begins from March 15. They have caused upsets in three consecutive 50-over formats but in this format of the game – they are yet to create a mark. They’ve struggled since last year against Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Netherlands. Going into their first qualifier, batting is a reason of concern for the 15th ranked side. They have only mustered a total of 150 runs once in the last 11 matches. Captain William Porterfield is the big name in the side. Over on the other side, Oman are the unknowns in world cricket. Largely comprising of immigrants from India and Pakistan, Oman have created the news for their choice to ‘Mankad’ opponents – most recently during the U19 World Cup. This is the first T20I between the two sides.

2200 hrs IST: OUT! Khawar is bowled. He chops the ball back onto the stumps. After hitting another massive six, Oman lose first wicket. In frustration, he nearly takes off bowler Kevin O’Brien’s feet as he walks back.

2052 hrs IST: SIX! That has traveled 93 metres! Poynter with a massive hit over long-on as it sails into the stands. Two overs left, Ireland are 134/4.

1958 hrs IST: OUT! INCREDIBLE TAKE! Maqsood springs up and catches the ball at short cover. Superb hang time to go up and keep the ball in his left hand. Ireland lose Stirling for 29 and first wicket falls at 48.

The practice ground at the HPCA stadium, half-indoor, half outdoor, adjacent to the main entrance, is so tiny and enclosed that an entire squad of Ireland players and their retinue of support staff could give it a Sunday bazaar-like feel.
