Girls outperformed boys in science and commerce streams of Meghalaya Board of School Education’s (MBOSE) Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) or Class 12 examination, the results of which were declared on Monday.

But the success rate, this time, dipped from the 2015 high, as did the aggregates of the candidates.

“In the science stream, 2,670 of a total 3,586 candidates, including 282 non-regulars, passed with 1,134 securing first division and 1,410 second,” MBOSE’s controller of examinations TR Laloo said.

The total pass percentage in science was 74.46. The pass percentage for 1,717 regular female science candidates worked out to 78.86 compared to 74.14% for the regular 1,587 male candidates.

The state’s East Jaintia Hills district recorded the highest pass percentage of 89.66 while South West Garo Hills had the lowest of 50%.

Shillong’s St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, however, bucked the trend by producing half of the 10 toppers in the commerce stream and 10 of 15 toppers in the science stream.

Amaayaa Goswami of Shillong’s St Anthony’s HS School headed the top 10 list in the science stream followed by Berister Swer of Jowai’s Government Boys HS School and Sourav Pathak of Cherrapunjee’s RK Mission HS School in joint second.

St Anthony’s HS School’s Lakshajyoti Paul secured the third position.

In the commerce stream, 70.62% of 2,185 candidates, including 265 non-regulars, passed. Of them, 364 got the first division and 882 second.

As in the science stream, female candidates performed better in commerce with 82.84% of 740 regulars emerging successful while 70.23% of the 1,179 regular male candidates passed.

East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills districts had the highest success rate of 100% while West Garo Hills district recorded the lowest of 55.67% in commerce.

The top three in commerce were Pema Lama of Shillong’s BBS College followed by Sagnik Choudhury and Nitish Kariwala, both of St Anthony’s HS School.

Educationists in the state appeared concerned that the success rate for this year’s Class 12 exams was lower than in 2015.

The pass percentage in commerce in 2015 was 72.32, which was 1.72% higher than this year.
Similarly, 1.22% more students had passed in science last year compared to this year.

The pass percentage in both streams had been increasing steadily since 2012.
