Sex And The City's Creator Dishes On The Stars He Originally Wanted To Play Big & Aidan
Whoa! The creator of Sex And The City dropped a major bomb about the original casting of the series!
In a new interview, Darren Star revealed Sarah Jessica Parker, ahem Carrie Bradshaw's main loves, Mr. Big and Aidan, almost didn't exist.
Well, just not as how you know them.
Star spilled that Chris Noth and John Corbett aren't who he initially had in mind to play their now-famous characters!
He confessed:
"I was thinking of Alec Baldwin for Big initially [in Sex and the City]. I don't really watch Law & Order, but I met with Chris Noth and thought he was perfect. I remember the first table read, how good he was. I'm not saying that Chris was Mr. Big, but he brought a lot of his own persona to the role… We initially were thinking about Aidan Quinn for Aidan, but I think he wasn't available. I loved John Corbett in Northern Exposure, and we were like, ‘Well, what's John Corbett been up to?' He just had the laconic, dudish vibe. But we kept ‘Aidan' because we loved the name."After six seasons and two movies, it's almost hard to imagine Alec or Aidan being able to fit in those roles.
Can you see it??
Sex and the City creator reveals original choices to play Big and Aiden
In a new interview, series creator and writer Darren Star reveals that he had other actors in mind to play both Aiden — Carrie’s on-again, off-again love interest for several seasons — and Big, the handsome beau she met in the very first episode and eventually married in the franchise’s first big-screen spin-off.
“I was thinking of Alec Baldwin for Big initially. I don’t really watch Law & Order, but I met with Chris Noth and thought he was perfect. I remember the first table read, how good he was. I’m not saying that Chris was Mr Big, but he brought a lot of his own persona to the role,” Starr said.
As for loveable furniture-maker Aiden, so ably portrayed by John Corbett in the show?
“We initially were thinking about Aidan Quinn for Aidan, but I think he wasn’t available. I loved John Corbett in Northern Exposure, and we were like, ‘Well, what’s John Corbett been up to?’ He just had the laconic, dude-ish vibe. But we kept ‘Aidan’ because we loved the name.”
Alec Baldwin and Aidan Quinn battling it out for Carrie’s affections? That could’ve been a very different television show.
While Noth has said he’d be open to appearing in a third Sex and the City big screen outing “if the writing is good” - “it’s been around so long and so many people talk about it that you may as well just go ahead and do it” — he said he couldn’t see a third film getting off the ground.
“I truly don’t think anybody really wants to see a Sex and the City 3. We’ve all moved on and got kids … and there are much edgier shows on TV now that Sex and the City spawned.”
