Randeep Hoodas 18-Kilo Weight Loss For Sarabjit
Sarabjit first look: Randeep Hooda lost 18kg in 28 days
Randeep Hooda’s films may not always set the
box office on fire, but he sure knows how to get the eyeballs. In one
of Bollywood’s most stunning transformation ever for a role, Hooda
surprised his fans on Friday morning when the first look of his
forthcoming film, Sarabjit, was released: We are told that he lost 18 kg
in 28 days to play Sarabjit
, an Indian national languishing in a Pakistani jail on charges of spying.
The biopic traces the struggles of Dalbir Kaur (to be played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan ) who runs from pillar to post to get her younger brother out of the Pakistani jail.
The 39-year-old actor looks shockingly malnourished, battered and destitute in the image shared by director Omung Kumar.
The Mary Kom filmmaker shared Randeep’s picture on Twitter and thanked the actor for his efforts. “@RandeepHooda Shocking transformation 18kgs in 28 days... #Sarbjit releasing 19th may,” he wrote.
Talking about Randeep's role in the film, Omung told IANS, "When I had approached Randeep for this role, I was very clear in my mind that I need someone who is open about going through a rigorous weight loss, as the role demanded lot of different looks."
"Randeep took that as a challenge and agreed upon giving 100 percent dedication not to prove that he can do it as an actor but to do justice to the character and the film. The role needed Randeep to look very fragile with his bones being visible. He shed around 18 kgs of weight in 28 days, went through a strict diet and in fact in the last few days he was living completely on water," added Kumar.
On the first day of the shoot, nobody could recognize Randeep until Omung called out his name. "It was only when I called for him that I realised he was sitting right there," Omung told Times Of India.
Talking about Randeep's drastic weight loss, the director revealed, "He cut down on his meals, filling up on coffee and water, even when we were shooting in Palghar and gorging on some great food. In his years in jail, Sarabjit was kept in a 4 x 4 room and had rat bites all over him. The first time I met Randeep, I told him that I wanted to see his bones. He took up the challenge and shocked even me."
Apart from Randeep Hooda, Sarbjit also stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Dalbir Kaur in the lead role. The film is slated to release on May 19 this year.
Extreme body makeovers is something that we associate more with Hollywood. Matthew McConaughey lost almost 19 kgs to play an Aids patient in Dallas Buyers Club, for which he went on to win an Oscar. Christian Bale’s film The Machinist had him dropping 27 kgs while Jake Gyllenhaal lost 13.6 kgs for Nightcrawler. Earlier, Tom Hanks dropped over 22 kgs for his Oscar-winning film, Castaway.

“The role needed Randeep to look very fragile with his bones being visible. He shed around 18 kgs of weight in 28 days, went through a strict diet and infact in the last few days he was living completely on water. The moment I told him about all this, Randeep just looked into my eyes and said that he will do it! Infact now his weight loss has become a major catalyst for him to get into the character with the right body language and expressions,” the Mary Kom director added.
Earlier, talking about his role, Randeep had said, “Sarabjeet is a story also of a prisoner but the narrative includes the journey right from his childhood to the time he passed away.”
Sarabjit
also features Darshan Kumar as Awais Sheik - a Pakistani lawyer who
left no stone unturned to get justice for Sarbjit. Richa Chadha will
also be seen in the film.
Sarabjit is slated to hit theatres on May 20.
Randeep Hooda was born in a small village called Daseya in the Rohtak district of Haryana. His mother, Asha Hooda, is a BJP politician and his father is a surgeon by profession. He did schooling from Delhi Public School before moving to Australia for higher studies. He is Bachelors in Marketing & Human Resource Management.
He made his film debut in Monsoon Wedding (2001) where he plays NRI (Non Resident Indian). He got the role in Monsoon Wedding primarily because of his Australian accent rather then his acting skills or good looks.
However even after a powerful performance in Monsoon Wedding he had to wait for 4 years to get a second project. He finally got lucky and Ramgopal Verma cast him as lead in a gangster flick "D" (2005). "D" was a turning point in his career and he suddenly became a household name across the country. The "D" which supposedly portrays Dawood Ibrahim's real life gave Randeep Hooda a grand entry into tinsel town.
Recently he got the lead role in "Karma, Confessions and Holi" (2006) produced by Drena De Niro.

Randeep Hooda is an actor based out of Mumbai, India. He made
his debut with Mira Nair's "Monsoon Wedding," and subsequently went on
to become a relevant player in the Hindi film industry with an
interesting body of work.
After his initial success with "Monsoon Wedding," Randeep was cast as the male lead in Ram Gopal Varma's gritty gangster film D, allegedly based on the life of Dawood Ibrahim. His performance in the film received positive reviews.
Soon after, Randeep's career expanded with lead roles in films such as Darna Zaroori Hain, Risk, Ru Ba Ru, Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye, and Love Khichdi. He has also starred in an international production titled, Karma Aur Holi, which revealed his universal appeal on a global scale. Outside films, Randeep is actively involved with the leading theatre group - Motley, founded by noteworthy Indian actor - Naseerudin Shah, his mentor.
Most recently, his performance was highlighted in the partially fictionalized 2010 blockbuster film, "Once Upon A Time in Mumbai," in which he played an honest cop who inadvertently gives rise to Dawood Ibrahim, one of India's most infamous underworld crime lords. His performance in the film was appreciated by critics and proved to be a turning point in his career. The film emerged as a critical and commercial success, earning over 78 crore (US$14.2 million) in India. Hooda later attributed his success to the film. The film went on to receive nominations for Best Picture at all major award functions.
The following year, Hooda featured in Tigmanshu Dhulia's romantic thriller Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster with Jimmy Shergill and Mahie Gill. Upon release, the film and his portrayal of a gangster who falls in love with a married woman while working for her as a driver, earned rave reviews from critics.
Hooda's first film in 2012 was Kunal Deshmukh's crime thriller Jannat 2, a follow-up film to Jannat (2008). While the film received mixed reviews from critics, Hooda was applauded for his performance. Taran Adarsh wrote that "the actor delivers yet another knockout performance. He dominates in several sequences, making you realize that if given an opportunity, the guy can steal the thunder from the best of actors." Sonia Chopra of Sify said, "Randeep Hooda is the best thing about the film." The film was a commercial success, with a domestic revenue of over 41 crore (US$7.46 million). His next appearance was in Pooja Bhatt's erotic thriller Jism 2 opposite Sunny Leone. The film and Hooda's performance garnered mixed reviews from critics. Lisa Tsering of The Hollywood Reporter said that Hooda "smolders to the best of his ability in the role of a violent criminal." Jism 2 was a moderate commercial success, earning 35 crore (US$6.37 million) in India.
Hooda's final film in 2012 was Madhur Bhandarkar's drama Heroine featuring Kareena Kapoor as the protagonist. He was cast by the director to essay the role of a cricketer named Angad Paul. Prior to the start of principal photography, actor Arunoday Singh was chosen to play the role, but was later dropped from the film due to unknown reasons. Media reports began speculating the name of several actors (such as Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan and Prateik Babbar) though Bhandarkar later confirmed that he had selected Hooda after seeing his performance in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster (2011). Upon release, the film received mixed to negative reviews but Hooda's performance was appreciated by critics. The film was eventually declared a below average grosser as it failed at the domestic and international box office.
As of February 2013, Hooda stars opposite Aditi Rao Hydari and Sara Loren in Mahesh Bhatt's Murder 3 and the anthology film Bombay Talkies, in the segment directed by Karan Johar, alongside Rani Mukerji and Saqib Saleem. He has also been signed on for several other projects including Vishram Sawant's Shooter, John Day, Rensil D'Silva's Ungli and Pooja Bhatt's Cabaret.

Personal Quotes (6)
I waited so long because I know how important the launch is for a
newcomer in our cinema. In this matter I want to play by their rules.
Like Ramu I believe audiences can be entertained without going into the
rut.
I'm really not nervous. I've gone through the process of the
acting in theater. I've done my best. What happens now is not in my
hands. If you have life's experiences with you nothing can stop you from
being a competent actor.
I never had a problem being called a Naseeruddin Shah protégé, a
Ram Gopal Varma product or Sushmita Sen's friend. I always knew I'd have
my own identity
Seriously I suspected I was a good actor, though I didn't know it
during 'Monsoon Wedding'. Now I realize the more I learn the less I know
about acting... and life.
Everyone wants to be famous, so do I. But I cannot lose sleep over
it. Today, I am not a huge box-office hit nor am I on the cover of film
magazines. If I were to take stardom seriously, I would have been
depressed.
At the end of the day an actor is only a cog in the wheel. But
experience helps. I've done six films in as many years. But I've learnt a
lot more. I'm losing my unawareness and becoming more humble
