Jat Reservation Stir: Army Called In As Haryana Minister's Home Set On Fire, 3 Dead

Here are the latest developments:
  1. Hundreds of protesters broke into the home of state Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu and set it on fire. The minister was in Chandigarh and his family had been moved to safety earlier.
  2. The protesters set the RN Mall in Rohtak on fire and even looted guns and ammunition from a private armoury.
  3. The army had been called in to the eight worst affected areas including Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sonepat, Bhiwani, Karnal and Hisar.
  4. Three people were killed in police firing. "Someone in the mob fired from a gun and the security personnel fired in self defence," said Haryana police chief YP Singhal.
  5. Protesters reportedly took some policemen captive and moved in a large crowd targeting police and private vehicles, home and offices, and even toll plazas. As roads and train tracks were blocked, the state government stopped bus services and over 500 trains in north India were affected.
  6. Mobile internet services were blocked in Rohtak yesterday as the nearly week-long agitation escalated. The police said a "leaderless mob" was moving around in the town.
  7. Schools have shut down in affected towns and the supply of milk, vegetables, fruits and other commodities has been hit because of the highway blockade.
  8. Jats in Haryana have been demanding OBC or Other Backward Caste quota in government jobs and education like their counterparts in five other states.
  9. Just before the 2014 election, the UPA government bypassed a central panel to bring in quota for Jats in Haryana, but the Supreme Court struck it down last year.
  10. Chief Minister ML Khattar has met opposition parties and Jat leaders to discuss ways of ending the crisis, including bringing a quota law.

The Army was called in on Friday in eight districts of Haryana after one person was killed and 21 injured in police action as the Jat protest for quota turned violent and the rampaging mobs set ablaze the state finance minister’s house besides several government and private properties.

Protesters also took some police personnel captive besides going on a rampage at many places including Rohtak, Jhajjar and Hansi, targeting police and private vehicles, buildings housing offices, including two toll plazas at Hansi in Hisar district and near Rohtak, both located on the Delhi-Hisar-Fazilka National Highway.

The agitation, which has been going on for last few days, escalated and turned violent soon after an all-party meeting held by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar issued an appeal for calling it off. Khattar gave an assurance that a solution will be worked out to extend reservation to the community.

One protestor was killed in Rohtak when the BSF personnel opened fire in “self-defence” after someone from the mob fired at and injured a BSF constable, Haryana DGP Yashpal Singhal told a press conference in Chandigarh. Since the situation was going out of control, the army has been called in for deployment in eight worst-affected districts — Rohtak, Jhajjar, Jind, Bhiwani, Hissar, Kaithal, Panipat and Sonipat, the state police chief said.

About 20 companies of central paramilitary forces (CPMF) have been sought from the Centre, police said.

Today, for the first time, the rail and road traffic on the Delhi Ambala National Highway and mainline railway route was also blocked by protesters at various places including in Sonipat district. A number of trainshave been cancelled.
