THE RUN
No fiery speeches were made by coach Rahul Dravid, no soul-stirring battle cry escaped captain Ishan Kishan’s throat. The mood at the India Under-19 team meeting on the eve of their World Cup semifinal against Sri Lanka was rather reflective. In his typically understated manner, Dravid told the Indian team not to try anything different in the big match, but play the way they have in the tournament: in a relaxed and confident manner.
Dravid expects colts to continue winning streak
India Under-19 cricket coach Rahul Dravid on Monday said his team will have to produce a good all-round performance to outwit Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup semifinal on Tuesday given that both sides are well aware of what to expect from each other.
With practice, red-ball prodigy demonstrates white-ball utility
Armaan Jaffer talks the way he bats, and bats the way he talks. Out there in the middle, he watches the ball cautiously, picks the most apt shot from his repertoire and executes it perfectly.
Asalanka hums his lines, hogs his runs
Among other things, the Youth World Cup is perhaps the first place where young cricketers have their first real brush with the media. It prepares future stars for lesser innocent times when cameras and microphones will be thrust into their faces and an inquisition will begin. At this stage, however, the press too ceases to be cynical. The chit-chats are friendlier; journalists look genuinely interested in the back-story of their subjects. And they are ready to hype up the good and play down the bad. Which is, in most cases, the opposite of what usually happens at the senior level.
Avesh Khan picks up his second wicket.
