It is the week of festivities again. And one of the most awaited festivals is approaching soon- Lohri. This is considered to be a financial new year for all Punjabi farmers. It is supposed to be traditionally associated with the harvest of rabi crops at the perfect time which is used to harvest sugar cane crops in the month of January.

Though Lohri has highly been glamorised in many mediums, it is simply a festival where people consume til (sesame seeds) and rorhi (jaggery) on the day of Lohri; as they are considered auspicious. The origin of the name comes from these two items which makes tilorhi ( til+rorhi) which eventually got shortened to Lohri.


There are many cultural activities centered around this festival. Being an important day for the farmers, it means sharing this love with each close person, friend and relative.
